In Touch Resources Aid Trauma-Informed Care in Rhino Refugee Camp
February 2025
Rhino Refugee Camp, located in the West Nile region of Uganda, is home to thousands of refugees fleeing violence and instability in South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Uganda has welcomed these displaced individuals with the support of the United Nations, Water Mission, and other international partners. Amid this crisis, newly formed churches have emerged within the refugee settlements, providing spiritual guidance and hope to those seeking to rebuild their lives.
In June 2023, Water Mission’s Living Water Officers began addressing the emotional and spiritual needs of these refugees by offering trauma-informed care. This training equips pastors and community leaders to help individuals process their pain and trauma through a biblical framework. The training explores key concepts such as family, community, love, and forgiveness, offering the foundation needed to foster healing and peace with God. Alongside this training, pastors receive Bibles, teaching materials, and In Touch Messengers—audio devices loaded with Scripture and sermons that bring the Word of God to life in a practical, accessible way.
The impact of these tools is evident in stories like that of Pastor Satimon Abraham. As a participant in the training, Pastor Satimon used his Messenger not only for his own ministry but also to reach a woman who was hesitant to attend church. After listening to the Bible on the Messenger in her home, she began attending his church, where she is now an active member. She is a wonderful example of how these resources can touch hearts and foster spiritual growth, even in the midst of hardship.
